SUMMARY
Responsible for installing, inspecting, repairing, and maintaining roofs covered with asphalt, tiles, shingles, or metals.  Assignments include the installation, replacement and repair of drain spouts and gutters.  Problems are referred to a supervisor.  Roofers receive general supervision and may direct the work of laborers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
  • Fastens composition shingles or sheets to roof with asphalt, cement, or nails.
  • Cuts roofing paper to size and nails or staples paper to roof in overlapping strips to form base for roofing materials.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment.
  • Removes snow, water, or debris from roofs prior to applying roofing materials.
  • Insulates, soundproofs, and seals buildings with foam, using spray gun, air compressor, and heater.
  • Punches holes in slate, tile, terra cotta, or wooden shingles, using punch and hammer.
  • Apply gravel or pebbles over the top layer, using rake or stiff-bristled broom.
  • Applies alternate layers of hot asphalt or tar and roofing paper until roof covering is completed as specified.
  • Overlaps successive layers of roofing material, determining distance of overlap, using chalk line, gauge on shingling hatchet, or lines on shingles.
  • Cuts strips of flashing and fits them into angles formed by walls, vents, and intersecting roof surfaces.
  • Mops or pours hot asphalt or tar onto roof base when applying asphalt or tar and gravel to roof.
  • Aligns roofing material with edge of roof.
  • Erects and checks scaffolding.
  • Cuts or fits strips of flashing.
  • Inspects roofs, gutters, and drain spouts for leaks and damages.
  • Makes minor repairs during inspections.
  • Reports structural weaknesses or major renovation needs to supervisor.
  • Repairs roofs by removing old covering, replacing with waterproofing materials, and blending with remaining roof covering.
  • Repairs and replaces gutters and down spouts.
  • Unstop roof drains and clogged pipes.
  • Performs shop work in constructing metal items used in roofing repairs.
  • Fabricates and installs metal hoods, and similar items.
  • Any other project or task necessary to ensure smooth and successful business operations.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • 2+ of roofing production experience; Preferred 3-5 Years
  • Consistent and dependable attendance.
  • Ability to report for work on time and ready to perform job tasks.

  • Shows interest in work tasks and performs them with a positive and enthusiastic manner.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of small measurement devises, handheld power tools, and other equipment used in roofing.
  • Ability to effectively organize own schedule to ensure timely completion of all projects within the scheduled timeframes. 
  • Ability to interact in a professional and courteous manner with all employees and managers of the Company and customers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and employees.
  • Ability to receive and follow instructions with minimum of oversight by supervisor.
  • Ability to follow through with instructions and complete assigned tasks.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks with diligence and without complaint.
  • Ability to successfully follow job task and/or project to full completion, including overtime and/or weekend work when necessary.
  • Ability to arrange dependable, consistent transportation to field job sites.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving many variables in standardized situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to outside unsheltered weather conditions and all types of weather for 8 to 12 hours.  The employee could be working in extremely hot or cold temperatures that could range from between 0- and 140-degrees Fahrenheit.

The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.  The noise level in the work environment is usually an office type environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of personal protective equipment. 
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry between 15 and 50 pounds.
  • Ability to twist, reach, bend, stoop, and squat frequently; daily.
  • Also be able to be on your feet, to load trailers and the movement to and from the trailer and the staging area of our equipment and material.
  • Must be able to tilt material or equipment, stack material as needed, and roll on hand truck to a designated area and place on floor, ground, or in trailer without harm to themselves or material or equipment.
  • Must be able to lift material and equipment above a person’s head to stack.
  • Must be physically able to mount and dismount our lifts, trucks, or tractors numerous times throughout the day.
  • This includes but is not limited to dismounting and remounting continuously to stack, mark, label and make ready to carry with the lift or hand trucks.
  • Ability to push or pull up to 150 pounds, such as a loaded wheel barrel.
  • Ability to work on and climb ladders up to 40 feet tall or scaffolding.
  • Ability to keep or regain body balance or stay upright when in an unstable position.
  • Ability to use a tar pot, torch, wheel barrel, spud bar, shovel, rake, broom, and tar mops daily.
  • Ability to work in a working environment that is loud and noisy on a near constant basis.
  • Ability to work in an environment with fumes, dust, dirt, smoke, gases, grease and oils and solvents.
  • Ability to be aware of surrounding area due to working at high levels and with hot products.
  • Manual dexterity to complete projects in a craftsman fashion.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow safety practices and procedures used in working on ladders and roofs. 
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions year-round with exposure to excessive heat and cold.
